Today!

January 6 - 8, 2011

Hosted by
Sonoran Arthropod Studies Institute
520-883-3945
at the Doubletree Hotel in Tucson, AZ

In the Southwestern United States, a significant number of people experience scorpion stings, Africanized bee attacks, or bites by species such as spiders, centipedes, fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and kissing bugs. Patients may suffer from pain, secondary infection, necrosis, anaphylactic shock, transmission of pathogens, or other problems. Diagnosis and treatment of invertebrate-related conditions present unique challenges for health care providers. Gaps in current understanding of the identification, venom chemistry, and pathological effects of medically significant invertebrates can impede prompt treatment of underlying causes and symptoms.

The first annual Medical Entomology Today! Conference is designed to support first-responders, EMT’s, doctors, nurses, emergency room staff, poison control staff, veterinarians, researchers, invertebrate specialists, and other professionals working in the fields of prevention, diagnosis, pain management, emergency assistance, medical toxicology, pharmacological response, and anti-venin research and production.

The MET Conference will be held at the Double Tree Hotel in mid-town Tucson on Jan. 6 - 8, 2011. The Hotel is close to the many attractions Tucson has to offer as well as being near the U of A.

*We are honored to have Rick Vetter, Department of Entomology, Univ. Calif. Riverside, as our first Keynote Speaker. His talk will be "The Myth of the Brown Recluse: Mythidentifications, Mythconceptions and Mythdiagnoses".
