The Nurturing Specialist
Janet K. Bardwell

The Audience also plays an integral part of the exhibit. They can use the cards provided to ask questions, make observations and comments. Their cards, and jANeT's answers are placed on the board above the typewriter and become part of the exhibit.

jANeT's work station includes all the equipment she needs to take care of the ants. Below are extra supplies and the reference book (The Ants by Bert Hölldobler and Edward O. Wilson).
jANeT's bright pink cart is covered with many tools for caring for the ants. With scissors, three kinds of forceps, aspirator, cotton balls and vinyl gloves, the tools of the kitchen, laboratory and nurse station are combined into one place. Other items include a repair kit of rubber stoppers, paper towels, spray bottle and food for the ants.
While cutting up crickets and apples for the ant colonies, jANeT gossips with each ant colony. They talk about sibling rivalry, fatherless homes, sanity and isolation. jANeT restricts her conversation to the ants and does not respond to audience's questions.
Each day at noon, Janet Bardwell transforms herself into the uniformed jANeT for the performance. Here she applies makeup and puts on a pink hairnet before attending to the ants.
After completing her list of tasks for the day, jANeT returns her uniform to the hanger. The performance lasts an hour to two hours each day depending on the questions on the cards.
