Each of the six ant colonies began as one newly mated queen collected soon after her nuptial flight and before she dug in to establish her own nest. First she was placed in a test tube with distilled water (see Extrafloral Nectar). There she began laying eggs and raising young that became the first workers in her colony. After the colony was established, it was transferred to brood chambers (see Pebbles: push - pull - drop) like those used in the exhibition.
