On Saturday, July 31, we had a picnic at Calabasas group picnic ground. This area is reserved by the Forest Service for large groups like ours so that we don't have to worry about interlopers. Thanks to Art Evans and and a number of others, blacklights surrounded the area and drew in many specimens to observe. The wetter than usual monsoon season made for good collecting, especially for Automeris pamina, one of the Sonoran Desert's many Saturniid moths.

Photos of the event were limited to these four. If you have photos from the Picnic, send them to SASI and we'll have more to see. Click the thumnails for an enlarged view.

Lido and Carla of the BBQ Ranch provided the vittles - barbecued chicken and pork ribs, beans and potatoes. For desert we had a choice of scrumptious peach cobler or chocolate chip cookies, or both if we wanted.
It is pretty easy to figure out what is going on here - people lined up to fill their plates. Many children and spouses attend the Saturday Picnic and participate fully in the festivities.
Janet Bardwell cooked for the vegetarians in the crowd and helped keep the refreshments flowing. She poses here with Gina Phillips since they were both wearing the 1996 Invertebrates in Captivity Conference t-shirts.
