.At Miguelito’s
Miguelito and Rodrigo’s vivero is spacious and well organized. It is located on a large finca owned by Rodrigo’s parents. It was constructed of entirely new fabric rather than having been salvaged from nursery’s as many of the breeder’s viveros are. The volume produced here is still low since the plants are young and cannot support many larvae at a time. Adjacent to the vivero is a small lab, entirely screened to help limit parasites attacking the caged larvae. It was spotless and the cages reflected their knowledge of sanitation to limit pathogens.

.... . Plants are grouped such that it is easy to work with one genera of butterflies in a given area, for example, all Passiflora species grouped together to support the various Heliconius they rear. Another area was planted with three species of Bird of Paradise, Heliconia. .

... Rodrigo’s family has a number of Brahma cattle, including a bull that was absolutely huge. They also have a nice pond in which they raise Tilapia for their personal consumption. I watched them being fed and saw many fish of all sizes as they swarmed the pelleted food provided.

.... Both here, and at Miguelito’s father’s vivero I had the opportunity to take some nice photos of butterflies. Click here to see some of them.
