I brought to Costa Rica two different lights to attract insects. The 150 watt mercury vapor is pictured here. It requires alternating current so I have only been able to use it when my hosts have electricity. A 50-meter extension cord helps get into the woods if such are near the homes in which I stay. Given its brightness and resulting effectiveness, this is what I prefer to use here. |

The 15 watt ultraviolet florescent light is powered by a 12 volt battery. I brought along a rechargeable dry cell and have either used it or just plugged into an automobile. It isnt quite as good, but this kind of light has served me well for over 20 years. It is my preference when camping since I cant stand to hear a generator running all night long.
These lights, the battery, my net and other equipment I am using on this trip were purchased from BioQuip, Americas finest entomological equipment company. BioQuip not only has the best and greatest selection of equipment, but has sponsored the Invertebrates in Captivity Conference for the past nine years.

On Tuesday night, we set up the UV light on the road down to the rearing operations. Since I brought only one sheet (to be used with the mercury vapor light), we had to use one of Sergio's patterned ones for UV setup. You can easily see which insects came to it. We used it but one night. We preferred to use the more effective mercury vapor light and white sheet which we set up behind the wall that protects the vivero from the prevailing winds. |

There were certainly a lot more insects flying than in March, especially moths. In four nights of running the lights, very few beetles and other nocturnal insects came in. Especially well represented were sphinx moths (Sphingidae) and giant silk moths (Saturniidae)so much so that we bring them to you here on separate pages. |
