At 3:30 pm, under skies holding imminent downpours, Joris and I headed out to a location Joris frequented years ago. Claudio, one of the guides from The Butterfly Farm, had only heard of blacklighting and had asked to come along. We stopped at a supermarket for some unhealthy dinner and began the climb over the pass. Our destination was a canyon downhill from La Paz in Sarapiqui. Our path was the same as when we had gone to Edgar's house for Semana Santa (Journal Entry 9). Following a dirt road along the face of the canyon through steady rain brought us to a spot with good exposure to the opposite face. With only a few minutes of light remaining, we donned our rain gear and set out to get the generator and mercury vapor light running. As soon as we finished, we dove back into the truck.
Stuck here, we dined on meat filled empanadas, Pringles and some other fat-filled goodies. Joris told the tale of his sixteen years building The Butterfly Farm and Costa Rica Entomological Supply. Claudio had not heard of the ups and downs over the years since he has only been with Joris for about three years. It was a fascinating story beginning with Joris being in Costa Rica on a Peace Corp assignment in 1986, the same time that SASI was starting. But
.that's his story to tell.
After about an hour, the rain quit so we could get out to see what was happening on the sheet. Considering the rain, a fair number of insects had come in. Over the next two hours we sat back in the chairs, talked and watched for new arrivals. It turned out to be a very nice last night in Costa Ricagood company and good bugs! Following are images of what came in.
