.. Grace services her caterpillars everyday, at least once. Since she was entertaining me with little field trips on the two days I was there, this work took place well into the evening, especially on the night before a batch of pupae would be taken by Oscar to CRES. All fresh cuttings are sprayed with a 1% solution of bleach and rinsed well before larvae are transferred to them. Frass and any sickly larvae are swept from the cage and deposited in a bucket containing a 10% solution. The cage bottom also gets sprayed with a 10% solution and is thoroughly dried before the larvae are returned.

When pupae are found on days other than Sunday and Tuesday, they are pinned to Styrofoam for storage until shipping day, or allowed to emerge for maintaining the captive population. On the eve of shipping days, pupae are collected, sprayed with a 10% bleach solution and packed in layers of cotton. While Grace serviced her bugs, I had the opportunity to take photos of lots of larvae. Click here to see them.

Patricia is Grace’s 10-year old daughter. I am indebted to her for helping me with my Spanish and I helped her with her English. Patricia’s chores each evening include feeding about 20 chickens and this hog.
