When I am in La Guacima, I live in the beautiful and spacious home of Joris Brinckerhoff and Maria Sabido. I work on these pages and sleep in the study, which is at the left side of this photo. It adjoins the kitchen and my presence is minimally felt since Joris, Maria and their two daughters, Katrina and Annette have rooms on the other end of the house. |

The house is currently getting an addition on the west side and I get to be its first occupant. Construction should be finished before May 1. I am looking forward to the move as I am sure Joris and Maria are looking forward to having their desk back. |

As part of the construction project, exterior wood is being stripped and resealed. The swallows, which live in the roof tiles, wont be affected but wasps living under the eaves were. I volunteered to do the nasty deed of killing them so that I could take these photos beforehand. There were three different species but I couldnt tell you who they were. On the nest that hasnt been entirely closed, you can see where fresh material has just been added to the outer shell. There was no shell at all only four hours before the photo was taken. |

This nest had either died or had been previously sprayed as it now serves as the retreat for a net web spider, Filistatidae. |

Formerly a coffee plantation, the one-hectare site has been landscaped with a variety of shade or fruit-bearing trees and butterfly host and nectar plants. There are also plants that are just nice to look at. |

I am seeing that Costa Rica has many affinities with southern Sonora. One is the lovely tree, Tabebuia. Here the species is T. ochracea and like those in Sonora, flower when they are leafless. All of the trees around La Guacima flowered in a two-week period and the flowers on each tree only lasted a couple days.
